I often get asked “Daryl How long have you been a photographer” All my life is the short answer, well since I was 8 and I was given my first camera when I was going on a school excursion.
I fell in love with the medium instantly. I still have those grainy photos of our school trip out to Tamworth in NSW Australia. It takes me back to that alien rural landscape that was so completely different to to my coastal life.
Over the past 40+ years I’ve documented my life’s journey the ups and downs the career changes the different faces that move in and out of your life and I’m still continuing with that today.
Life is a journey full of stories and that’s what I love, there’s nothing like going through old photos, the memories come flooding back it’s like time travel, it takes you back to a bygone era. I’m forever grateful to my parents for buying me that little instamatic camera
From school I joined the Royal Australian Navy and had a career that lasted 12 years, I then worked as an air-conditioning mechanic for another 12 years in the later stages of that career I enrolled in a part time 2-1/2 year photography course. I already had a good eye and just wanted to sharpen my skills as a photographer with a view to turning my life long passion into a life long career.
I found work as a full time photographer for the next 10 years working for the local paper. Photographing all manner of things from people to cars to houses you name it I reckon I’ve photographed it. During this time I started Daryl Gordon Photography as I was often asked whether I did any family photography.
From time to time I still get asked “Daryl what’s your favourite type of photography?” Well of course I just love taking photos, However when it comes down to it I love photographing people, I love capturing the personality, and the stories of people in the photographic medium. I’ve been running Daryl Gordon Photography full time for the past 4 years, during that time I’ve had the good fortune to meet and photograph a host of wonderful families and individuals. Photography has been the one constant throughout my life I just love it.
I love the fact that a single image can connect you to that space and that moment in time.
If you also have a passion for photography and would like me to help you capture your family story and the connections within your family all my contact details are here
thank you
