This series is simply a portrait of a person with an item that is special to them. -Daryl Gordon
Me and My Guitar
I borrowed and started mucking around with a friend’s guitar when I was about 13.
I got my first guitar on my 14th birthday, I didn’t have any lessons apart from some friends who could play and they showed me some simple chords.
Through the school years I would play around and try to get the hang of things at night, there was no internet or YouTube back then to guide me, everything had to be done by ear.
I had to tune my guitar using the family piano however I think I eventually got a guitar tuner
Over the years I came to realise that:
If you practice things you can’t do, eventually you will achieve them.
Every guitar does something different and this has become an expensive hobby.
Music becomes a fixation and a place to escape.
Ideas and things you learn become songs.
The creation of something whether it be music, words, poetry or art is a very personal venture.
I’ve never used music a source of income, but more as a hobby or passion, that way you can play when you want to not when you need to.
Most people I know through my work/professional life don’t know I play and record music.
