This weeks Skater is Bucky David Hamer, I’d never met Bucky before he was introduced to me by Rich Hiatt whilst I was over on Phillip Island, Bucky has a sick ramp in his backyard which was way to dangerous for this old man.
Bucky’s Bio
Originally from the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, I moved to Phillip Island at the age of 21. Other than skating, I have been heavily involved in snowboarding since 1989, and surfing for the best part of my life. I am currently the manager of Island Surfboards, and the president of the “4Shore Sk8 Park” committee pushing for a skate park for Phillip Island. I married my wife Lauren in 2013, and have 2 beautiful kids Frankie ( nearly 2) and Monty (10 weeks)
Bucky thanks for your time being part of this series
Q:How old are you?
A: 40 years old
Q:How long have you been skating for?
A: I got my first skateboard when i was 6, so 34 years
Q:where did you first start skating?
A: I started skating with mates in Heathmont… there was a perfect painted curb at the local Caltex that we used to session all the time. I started skating transition at Ringwood bowl (long gone now), then Knox, but really got into it when Lilydale bowl was built in the early 90’s
Q:Who has or was the biggest influence on you?
A: My main influences came from the crew I skated with, we all pushed each other. A couple of the older guys got me into skating Vert with regular trips to Vermont, Prahran and Mordialloc. On a pro level… Cab! (Still the man…) I still watch Ban this “how to draw the perfect line” for inspiration.
Q:where’s your favourite spot to skate?
A: Noble Park is number 1 for sure. My backyard is lots of fun too!!
Q: Any epic session stories to share?
A: Every session is epic! Play the music loud, have a good crew and a beer or two, and you can’t go wrong.
Q: Rules to live and skate by?
A: After losing my dad when I was young, my focus on skateboarding was the only thing keeping me out of trouble. Without it, who knows where I would’ve ended up? For me, other than my beautiful family, that focus on skating is my path to a happy life.
Thanks Bucky
