What’s that old saying?
The eyes are the windows to the soul.
Or look me strait in the eye.
If your trying to make a beautiful portrait of somebody then 90% of the time you want them to look straight down the camera lens to make eye contact with you and therefore the eventual viewer of the portrait. It just works, it’ll turn a good portrait into a strong portrait.
Of course there is always the exception to the rule, which I’ll cover in another blog.
However for now try it out next time you’re photographing somebody, get them to look off camera and then ask them to look straight down the lens and see for yourself the dramatic difference that eye contact can make to your portraits
